POST NUMBER SEVENTEEN: Architecture of tomorrow
This past monday we had a lecture at WIT’s Parallel Practices Lecture Series with Kent Larson - Director of the MIT Media Lab across the river. It was an exciting time and really fascinating to learn about all this new technologies - that we often see in movies like I Robot, Mission Impossible, Minority Report or Iron Man - come to life.
Larson’s presentation was mind-blowing. Today the Media Lab is one of the top research facilties in the US and the world, and it’s effort are dedicated to improve our current world problems with creative solutions. They deal with issues from innovating urban housing, integrating human activity with technologies to mapping real time experiences in new ways, exploring space on demand and understanding energy networks.
One big idea I took from Larson’s lecture was his search to understand human behavior in relationship to cities and large contexts - a motivation that led him to develop a program called City Science.

POST SIXTEEN: Rem is kool
One of my favorite architects: Rem Koolhas
“I don’t believe that globalization necessarily implies homogenization,” he said. “If you look carefully, there are vast and enormous differences, and so my own particular fascination is to see globalization not as an assertion of one kind of architectural model, but to see it as an occasion to intervene in different ways and at different levels in a variety of different cultures.”
Excerpt from an interview conducted in 1996 - and still relevant 15 years later.

POST NUMBER FIFTEEN: An article by my history professor
This post is about an interview by my current history-of-architecture professor Marc Neveu to Nader Tehrani and David Hacin called ‘Beaux Arts & Back Again’ published in Architecture Boston’s Spring 2013 Volume. It’s an article that intends to understand architectural education, reflects on our profession today and looks to visualize what it would be in the next few years.
One aspect I found fascinating was Tehrani’s view of architecture today, and here is a quote from the article: “Now, architecture and design is everywhere because of the Internet. It’s arguable that design is at its peak in terms of relevance. The accessibility of architectural images and contents is ever-present, for young designers and clients alike, making design more popular than ever before. In turn, this has made it even harder to raise the stakes of good design, critical thinking, and discerning judgment”
Great article!

POST NUMBER TWELVE: Third Studio Project @ Spring 2013

A few weeks ago we had to go back to our Mapping 1.0 project, analyze what worked and what did not to therefore start our Mapping 2.0 exercise. For this time, we decided to work in a larger group (8 of us) and as we were brainstorming about ideas and goals, we concluded that we wanted to understand the different conditions present in the site at Magazine Beach in Cambridge. Such conditions were: vegetation, water, manmade spaces and the general field. We conclude that this exercise would helps us identify different patterns and occurrences within the area and moreover it would help us get an overall understanding of our project. That said, you wonder how we did this? It all came down to a snowball fight and here is the final product that we constructed.

Brief description: This installation examines the relationship between human interaction with the existing elements. As a group we were interested in exploring the different conditions present at four points throughout the entire site.

With this interest we decided to generate four different transepts focusing on the presence of the repetitive elements, like: natural land, vegetation, water features and manmade land.

Employing the idea of human interaction, each one of us represented an element present in the site, to therefore understand the interaction of these condition at any given time.

We decided to portray this idea by utilizing the winter conditions - more specifically colored snow as medium to map these tensions.

Using this methodology we were able to translate the data of both situations into a three dimensional installation.

Medium: Yarn, fabric and pins.

Size: Average Studio Room.

Check out what most school’s aren’t teaching nowadays. Really interesting short-video about the importance of learning codes and how to use them in today’s world. Basically promoting computer coding.
